Built by the Architect Sinan with the order of Sokullu Mehmet Pasha in 574, the complex in one of the best examples of Ottoman architecture.
There is a caravansary, bazaar site, Turkish bath house, mosque and a madrasah within the complex.
It is known that St. Simeon arrived the monastery, built in 6th century A.D. on a 479 meter high hill, in 541 and lived on the pillar here for 40 years. St. Simeon is the most important representative of the “leaving the world” cult of his time.

The tunnel here was built in order to obviate the floodwaters. Total length of the tunnel is 1380 meters, 300 meters of it being open space. 100 meters in following the Titus tunnel, there are rock tombs.
